What to Wear to Play Pickleball

June 12, 2025

New to pickleball? One of the best things about the sport is that the dress code is basically "wear whatever you want." But after a few games, you'll realize some clothes work way better than others.

Here's what to know before you hit the court.

Tops: Comfort Over Everything

The most important rule for pickleball tops: you need to be able to move freely. That means no stiff button-downs, no tight-fitting dress shirts, and definitely no "I'll just wear my work clothes" energy.

Cotton tees work fine for casual play. They're comfortable, cheap, and you probably already own a dozen. The downside is they absorb sweat and get heavy.

Moisture-wicking shirts are the upgrade. Polyester-blend fabrics pull sweat away from your skin and dry fast. If you play more than once a week, these are worth it.

UPF 50+ shirts are the pro move for outdoor players. They block UV rays, wick moisture, AND usually have mesh ventilation panels. Your dermatologist will be proud.

What About Pickleball-Specific Shirts?

Absolutely yes. Wearing a pickleball shirt to the court is like wearing a band's t-shirt to their concert — some people say don't, but those people are wrong. It's fun, it starts conversations, and it shows you're all in on the sport.

Funny slogans, performance fabrics, or just a clean pickleball graphic — there's no wrong choice.

Bottoms: Shorts, Skorts, or Athletic Pants

Shorts with some stretch are the most popular choice. Look for 7–9 inch inseam for men, or whatever length you like for women. Pockets are essential for holding balls between serves.

Skorts are hugely popular in women's pickleball. They look great, move well, and usually have built-in shorts underneath.

Athletic pants or leggings work great for cooler weather. Just make sure they're stretchy enough for lunges and quick lateral moves.

Footwear: This One Actually Matters

Court shoes are the one piece of gear that actually affects your game. Running shoes are too soft — you need lateral support. Look for:

  • Tennis shoes or court-specific shoes
  • A non-marking sole (required at most indoor courts)
  • Good lateral support for side-to-side movement
  • A firm, flat outsole for quick direction changes

The Bottom Line

Wear whatever lets you move, keeps you comfortable, and makes you happy. Pickleball is supposed to be fun. If a shirt with "Dink Responsibly" on it makes you play with a smile, that's the right shirt.
